South Africa Legalizes Rhino Horn Trade

April began with devastating news for South Africa’s rhino, as domestic rhino horn trade became legal in the country. South Africa’s Constitutional Court dismissed an appeal by the Department of Environmental Affairs to uphold a moratorium on the domestic trade in rhino horn. Africa’s rhino are threatened by unprecedented levels of poaching driven by consumers who erroneously believe that rhino horn is a medicinal cure-all for everything from headaches to cancer. The domestic legalization will allow criminal gangs to have legal cover under which to operate and is an indisputable setback in the fight to protect Africa’s rhino. “We at African Wildlife Foundation despair for what this will mean for the survival of the species,” says Philip Muruthi, AWF’s vice president for species protection.

"The partnership…presents a chance to play an active role in the fundamental changes taking place in our society,” said AWF President Kaddu Sebunya.
